Tempting Thursday-Bringing Some Culture To Gigi's Consignment Closet

Coco Chanel: The Legend and The Life
I have never been a fan of fashion biography's. But rumor has it that  British fashion journalist Justine Picardie has written one of the most comprehensive and compulsively readable glimpses into Coco Chanel's life. Justine Picardie focuses on Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s turbulent relationships with others and how the young woman made herself into a fashion icon for the ages. This book is not just for lovers of classic couture—Chanel’s story is for all those who ever wanted to reinvent themselves and become larger than life in their own time.

The Social Network
It seems impossible to make a compelling film about the Internet, but of course, if anyone is going to accomplish the impossible, it is screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and director David Fincher. According to the critical consensus, the pair’s drama about the genesis of megasite Facebook is shaping up to be the shoo-in for this year’s best picture and is this month’s must-see popcorn destination. I'm not sure if I'm more excited  to see Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg ('cause he's just too cute) or to see Justin Timberlake. I luvs him. Either way, I will be springing for the cost of a ticket for this one.

The Savoy of London Reopens
I visited the Savoy years ago while in London and fell in love with it's old world charm and decadence. The hotel, which closed in 2007 for refurbishing, underwent one of the most lavish and extensive renovations in British history, with more than 1,000 workers creating new interiors under the direction of designer Pierre Yves Rochon. The hotel will retain its original Edwardian and deco elements but features a revamped River Restaurant and a new art deco bar, the Beaufort, which will serve champagne around the clock.

The Walking Dead
I am a horror film & book junkie. There hasn't been a good old fashioned zombie horror film since Night Of The Living Dead. AMC’s new thriller drama The Walking Dead might fill this void. The show, based on the comic book by Robert Kirkman, centers on life after a zombie apocalypse hits Earth. A small group of human survivors, led by yummy police officer Rick Grimes tries to stick together, escape death, and not kill one another in the process. This show debuts on Halloween of course. Guess you know where I'll be.

A Life in the Theater
I am a huge fan of ANYTHING starring Patrick Stewart.  A Life in the Theatre, starring Patrick Stewart and T.R. Knight (of Grey’s Anatomy) opens at the Schoenfeld on October 12. The play revolves around two actors battling it out over a dressing room and discussing the ins and outs of working in the theater world,  The subject matter may be a tad involved, but I would watch Stewart read the phonebook.

Fashioning Fashion at LACMA

Los Angeles is home to many costumes, but this month’s most compelling can be found at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where a giant acquisition of traditional European garb has led to the show Fashioning Fashion: European Dress in Detail, 1700–1915”. The items on display will become part of the museum’s permanent collection, but before heading into the archives, LACMA is celebrating its new wares with the show, opening October 2. This stunning collection contains such pieces as: an 18th-century embroidered man’s vest from the French Revolution, glass-beaded gowns and evening mantles, and garments from Europe’s royal courts.
