I am still recovering…

I’m back from North Carolina but am still recovering. Had a fantastic time seeing my mom and brother and schlepping around the town but the train ride back killed me. We were inundated with screaming kids and I swear I’ve been in meat lockers that were warmer. I am flat wore out.

So please enjoy the following recycled post while I lay on the couch and eat bon bons recuperate. *cough-cough*

WTH Wednesday-In Everything There Is Beauty

Everything in the world has beauty. In some way or form. A child's first cry. The flash of gold at the very end of a sunset. Flipping someone the bird. Yes, even flipping the bird can be a thing of beauty IF you do it right. Last week I tweeted with a friend about what and what not is acceptable from a car. She claimed that yelling c**t was perfectible acceptable. I added that so was flipping someone off. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's in the DMV handbook. I was shocked when she shamefully tweeted that she had NEVER flipped someone off from a car. WHAT??? How was that possible? That's like saying you've never pumped your own gas or had your oil changed. I was shocked.

So this is for you @smokinhotbooks. Flipping someone off is an art form. It speaks though no sound, no additional items required to perform, and it is almost universally recognized(no language barriers). Other countries do have similar but slightly different forms that are acceptable alternatives to the American version.

From wikipedia: In the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, the V sign serves a similar purpose. In countries where Spanish, Portuguese, or French are spoken, and especially on the Iberian peninsula and in Latin America, a gesture called the Bras d'honneur is equivalent to the finger.Italy, Poland, and countries under the influence of Russian culture (Russia,Belarus, Ukraine) also see the Bras d'honneur as equivalent to The Finger. In some African and Caribbean countries, a similarly obscene gesture is extending all five digits with the palm facing forward, meaning "you have five fathers" (thus calling someone a bastard).[18] In Greece, the five fingers are spread wide and the palm is pushed towards someone in a gesture known as the Moutza. The middle finger is still used though, and it is considered more insulting. In India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka the social circles exposed to the western cultures use the middle finger gesture in the same sense that it is used in those cultures. The same is true for most South Asian countries.[19]

Even William Shakespeare got in on the action. In the play Romeo and Juliet, Capulet's servant Sampson starts a fight by "biting his thumb" at Abraham, Montague's servant. This gesture can be interpreted as being equivalent to giving someone the middle finger.

The history of flipping the bird. Giving someone "the finger" can date its origins back over 2500 years. The first written record of the insult occurred in ancient Greece, where the philosopher Socrates made a crude gesture with his hand just after asking, "I drank WHAT???". Even back then, the bird was considered an aggressive put-down. When the Romans imported the art, music, and culture of the Greeks, the finger came along, too. Julius Caesar was said to have flipped Brutus the double bird off after his friend stabbed him in the back and killed him. During the Middle Ages, the finger went underground.

It was still known, but the Catholic Church frowned upon its use, so the infamous middle finger nose rub and ear scratch were invented. By the early 20th century, the finger was the one symbol every man, woman and dog could understand. With the invention of the automobile, it could be delivered from behind the safety of glass & steel, and at great speeds. All the finger needs to deliver its punch is a clear line of sight. Even our government got in on the action. At a campaign stop for Senator Bob Dole in 1976, Nelson Rockefeller was heckled by protesters telling him what they thought of his Vietnam war policy by casting their middle finger votes. Never one to back down, Rockefeller flipped 'em off right back.

MarkScarola

Considering the Vice-president of the USA could flip off with impunity, it is no surprise that only a few months later, an appellate court in Connecticut ruled the finger was not legally obscene.

At the dawn of a new millennium, we can rest assured this once endangered bird is thriving. Today it appears in films(Titanic), books(Mark Henry's Happy Hour Of The Damned), school yards, and, network television(The Simpsons). Instead of shunning this "obscene" gesture, we must treasure its rich cultural heritage. We are living in the Golden Age of The Finger. Get used to it.

Now, on to gestures. If your going to flip someone off then you need to do it right. Here is step by step pictorial to help you achieve perfect form each and every time.Nothing is more embarrassing then ineptly flipping someone off.

So please read, commit to memory, and PRACTICE! Because most people don't whip out an little cheat sheet when flipping the bird.

It's beauty is in the the spontaneity. Here are some additional pictorials to help you "flip" to the proper occasion.

Freecycling...A Mini Rant

About 1 year ago I was heavy into Freecycling. I liked the whole concept. Giving away what you didn't need or want to those who might couldn't afford it. The rules are pretty simple. Post what you want to give away and then pick whom you wnat to give it to from emails sent asking for it. I usually just picked the first person who inquired. Most sites do specifically say that this is NOT for professional resellers. I follow the first sale doctrine. Once it's yours...I don't care what you do with it. But then it happened. The professional reseller found me and my items and my descent into a personal hell began. First the innocent questions started. Asking about sizes, condition, ect... That was fine. I had often used freecycle to find play clothes for the kidlet and had recieved some nasty stuff so I liked to be inquizative too. But then the hard lining started. She wanted to know brand names, age, how much wear, could I send pictures, what was the retail price, could she come look first? Helloooo???? This ain't Walmart honey. Now, why would an out of work "mom" who was just looking for some clothing for their poor kid name that info? Hmmmm.... So after doing some investigating I came across an interesting listing on Ebay. Yup, "out of work" mama had listed my clothing on Ebay and was selling it. The kicker? She didn't have them. Hadn't seen them. I don't even know where she got the pictures from. I know your waiting on pins and needles wanting to know how I fixed her little red wagon. Well, I'm not proud of what I did but I did get a good laugh out of it. I simply led her on while the listing was running and kept her on a short leash. Promising times for her to come over then having to "cancel." After her listing sold for over $100 I told her that due to mitigating circumstances I found a needier family to give it too. OMG. She freaked. I received hate emails for 6 months. She called me names and told me she would do things to me that I know are anatomically impossible. After a while she gave up and I never bothered with Freecycle again. Now, I don't want anyone to think that Freecycle is filled with crazy stalking non spelling peeps. That was the only bad experience I had in over 100 transactions. So if you use Freecycle do it in the spirit it which it was started. Give freely and ask for legit things you need. Muhwaaaaaahahahahahahaha

Happy Earth Day 2010

       HAPPY EARTH DAY 2010 everyone!!!!!
To celebrate Earth Day I decided to bring you some tips on what you can do to help save our planet.
I know it's hard to be green everyday.  But just trying one of these tips can help more then you realize.

Here are some things you can do around your house to make it a little greener for everyone.

1. Did you know that you may not even NEED to laundry soap to clean clothing.
Clothing has been around for eons, but laundry soap is relatively new.
So how did the oldies get their clothing clean?
Agitation.
They used rocks and rivers. We have machines.
I have tested and YES for lightly dirty clothiing and simple run through machine with just water will get your clothes clean.
Now. If your like me and are conditioned to think that CLEAN=SOAP then why not save that $14.99 you spend on Tide for something else and try the recipe below. I tried it on light to nasty "OMG I can't believe you brought that into my house" clothing and they all came out clean and smelling fresh.

Here's one from The Simple Dollar.
• 4 cups of water.
• 1/3 bar of cheap soap, grated.
• 1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda).
• 1/2 cup of Borax (20 Mule Team).
• 5-gallon bucket for mixing.
• 3 gallons of water.
First, mix the grated soap in a saucepan with 4 cups of water, and heat on low until the soap is completely dissolved. Add hot water/soap mixture to 3 gallons of water in the 5-gallon bucket, stir in the washing soda and Borax, and continue stirring until thickened. Let the mix sit for 24 hours, and voila! Homemade laundry detergent.
You can also make your own glass cleaner-Vinager. Furniture polish-Oil & lemon juice. Baking soda is an all natural scrubbing agent.

2.Want a garden but have no space? Why not plant your produce in pots?

It is amazing what you can grow in a 4-foot area or with eight to 10 potting containers.
If this is your first time then I suggest growing some easy veggies to help you get the feel for gardening.
Some easy veggies are lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, peppers,  cukes.
Remember, not all veggies are suitable for container gardening so you want to stick with early maturing, non top heavy veggies.

3. Replace your light bulbs. A compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) will save about $30 over its lifetime and pay for itself in about 6 months. It uses 75 percent less energy and lasts about 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb.

4. Do you drive 30 million miles to work each day? Try car pooling. Here in FL we have Park & Ride.
You drive your car to a Park & Ride location then hitch a ride with someone else and commute to work.
The areas are well secured AND you get to drive in the car pool (HOV) lane.
OooooO. Ahhhhh.

5. Take care of your car. Proper tire pressure can save wear and tear on your vehicle and also save you $$$ in gas as you will consume less fuel.

6. Stop using paper towels. Or at least replace with recycled paper towels.
With over 90% of US households taking advantage of the convenience of paper towels we produce over 3,000 tons of waste each day. Did you know if each home simply replaced one roll of their traditional paper towels with paper towels made from recycled paper, we could avoid wasting 3.4 million cubic feet of landfill space and prevent 864,000 trees from being cut down.

7. Eat one Vegan (meatless) meal a day. You'll not only feel better, but according to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads.

 8. And last but not least...RECYCLE, RENEW, & REUSE

Companies That Pay It Forward

Often when I'm out shopping I really don't think about where my items are coming from or how they are made. As I have gone green, I have become more conscientious. There are so many products out there that "pay it forward" so to speak. Meaning that when you buy them...they give back to the community. The best way to determine if you are buying from a conscientious company is see if they are part of Fairtade. In the US, Fair Trade Certified™ food products carry the label of the US Fair Trade certifying body, TransFair USA. This label certifies that the farmer has received a fair price for the commodity. Here is just a small list of everyday companies you can buy from that are doing their part to help the world...one small purchase at a time. (Product)RED I'm sure you all heard of the company (Product)RED. Gap did a HUGE ad featuring them 2 years ago promoting different products endorsed and designed by different celebs that were available for sale. (Product)RED was founded to combat AIDS in Africa. 10 brands with one goal. Every time you buy a (product)red brand that company will donate up to 50% of the cost to get life saving AIDS medicine to Africa. These products DO NOT cost anymore then they would normally. For example Starbucks. I know all you crazy people love Starbucks. For each lb of Starbucks red whole bean coffee you buy, Starbucks donates $1 to the Global fund. Each time you swipe your Starbucks red card they donate $.5 cents. Divine Chocolate Have you ever had Divine Chocolate? OMG the white chocolate is...orgasmic. *happy sigh* At the heart of Divine’s heavenly tasting chocolate there is a unique story. Not only do the Kuapa Kokoo farmers’ of Guana receive a Fairtrade price for their cocoa, but they also own 45% of the company, therefore have a direct influence over how the company is run and share in the profits from the chocolate. Laga Laga Handbags was started by Roy van Broekhuizen. Laga Handbags provides a place of peace, refuge and love for victims of disaster who are rebuilding their lives, one handbag at a time. These bags are beautiful!! All handmade. The women who make these handbags get a WELL above average pay wage that allow them to rebuild their lives and save for the future. Hello Rewind This new 7 VERY cool company makes laptops covers out if your fav t shirt. And by doing so they pay it forward in 2 ways. Hello Rewind takes your favorite old t-shirts that have lived out their useful life as clothing and turn them into a brand new product - a beautiful laptop sleeve. But they also have a special component to this business plan. The company finds not only new lives for a t-shirt but also, and more importantly, new lives for women in New York City who have been rescued from the sex trafficking industry.

Out With The Old And In With The New

Spring is the time to clean your closet. But what to do with the clothing you no longer wear or *gasp* fit in to? Recycling and upcycling are one option. Take the undesirable item and make it into something else. Old t shirts and jeans can become trendy kick arse skirts. Old cashmere and wool sweaters can be washed(felted) and made in to adorable purses, hats, gloves, leg/arm warmers. Check out this site for some clever ideas for old wool & cashmere. The Threadbanger. This clever little DIYer found some cast off Chucks and with some extra fabric, laces, and some time & imagination made these uber cool knee highs. Got some old accessories that are broke or missing and item? Make shoe and purse jewelry. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination. Not the crafty type? Don't worry-neither am I. :) Consignment stores are a wonderful way to recycle your clothing and score some cash. Most consignment cstores do a 60/40 take. Store gets 60 and you get 40. They often require the clothing to be clean, in good condition, and a recent style. Some consignment stores will allow you to sell the clothing to them for store credit. You often get more money for your items that way and you can spend it right there. Win-Win. *I do consignments if your interested. Contact me thru my store. One idea that has become VERY popular the last year are swap parties. Swap parties are just what you would think. You take items you no longer want and contribute to the swap pile. For every item you bring...you get to swap one out. Don;t know anyone who participates in that? How about start you r own? It's a great way to meet new people, score some new duds, and hear some of the neighborhood gossip. ;) Have fun!!
