Review: The Unwanted by Shiloh Walker

The Unwanted

The Unwanted (FBI Psychics Novella #3.5) by Shiloh Walker
Paranormal Romance
E book, 143 pages
July 30, 12013
Samhain Publishing

Favorite Quote: “All I knew was that you were leaving me...leaving me and breaking my heart.“

She doesn’t want him. He doesn’t need her. Like hell…

Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away.

Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best.

For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside.

Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power.

But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do. (Goodreads)

I thoroughly enjoy Shiloh Walker’s FBI Psychics series. An intensely sensual and intriguing dark paranormal series that addresses the choices one makes when battling evil with shocking gifts that can often work against the owner.  The Unwanted is a novella that helps to forge the link between the FBI group and a private investigative group.  Though part of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. The Unwanted is a shockingly seductive psychological thriller that hooked me from page one. Shiloh Walker has a wonderful writing style that draws you into her characters’ emotional pathways and lets you feel with them what they are experiencing. Romance and taut suspense go hand in hand as we follow a gritty and dark well plotted storyline down a twisting path of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Destin Mortin has a gift that gives as well as receives. A fact that her ex boyfriend and partner, Caleb Durand, struggled to cope with until he was forced to leave her to save his own sanity. When Destin’s boss hands her a case on some unsolved college rapes, Destin is dismayed to find she will be partnered with Caleb. Destin has never understood or forgave caleb for abandoning her. Caleb loved Destin unconditionally but her gift and her refusal to learn control over it killed his soul a little everyday. As Destin and Caleb investigate their case, they learn some interesting information that suggests that this case strikes closer to home then they could ever imagine.

The romance between them is hot yet bittersweet. The chemistry between them smolders heavy in the background as they struggle to get past the hurt and pain they left each other with. It’s a strong part of the storyline and complements the main conflict. Their physical scenes are tasteful and satisfying. It was very easy to get caught up in the emotional currents of these two star crossed lovers as try to find their second chance.

The secondary characters are bold, viable additions to the story as they add layers to the suspense and mystery. Each one is a piece in the puzzle; they make up a solid foundation for our storyline to build upon. As with any good thriller, there are multipe sub plots running through the main storyline and each one is a key to the final outcome. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of maintaining these separate entities without overburdening us with unnecessary information or complicated scenarios. When it all comes together in the end, we are treated to an astounding finale that ties it all together.

The Unwanted is a worthy addition to this series and a must read for those readers who love their paranormal romances to be wrapped in dark emotional suspense and intrigue. I am looking forward to the release of her next full length novel in the series, The Protected, set to release September 3, 2013, by Berkley Trade.

Favorite Quote: “This was going to end in heartbreak.“

His past is a mystery, even to him-a werewolf with memories so lost in a fog that even the Hunter’s healers cannot help him. More than a century ago, Toronto awakened on an unfamiliar street, naked and alone- and dogged by the unanswered questions of his enigmatic existence.

The vampire Sylvia is no Hunter. She’s a mercenary who just barely skates this side of what the Hunters consider acceptable. All she wants is to hunt her quarry, and make a lot of money. Her newest prey is a devious killer. But her newest complication is of a more intimate sort: a blonde, blue-eyed werewolf who interferes with her plans in so many exquisite ways. (goodreads)

Toronto is a werewolf whose past is a complete mystery. Attacked by five feral wolves and left for dead, he was found by the witch Nessa and nursed back to health. He now works as a hunter and lives to annoy master vampire Rafe. When a vicious pedophile vanishes from house arrest, Rafe sends Toronto to find him and bring him in. Rafe warns Toronto that he will have to some competition in the form of a certain mercenary vampire who also has the pedophile on her hit list. Sylvia, a vampire who murders for hire, has been paid by the pedophile's last victim’s parents to take this animal down. She knows she will have to tread carefully to avoid the pious hunters who object to her methods, because one way or another, this pedophile won’t see the light of day again.

Favorite Quote: “ You can take that Tinkerbell shit and shove it up your ass. “

Nia Hollister doesn’t scare easily. Come hell or high water, she intends to find her cousin’s killer. She returns to Ash, Kentucky, for answers. What she doesn’t expect is to ache with desire every time she sees Law Reilly. If any man can help her escape the nightmares for a while, it’s him. But can she allow herself to take comfort in those strong arms when a murderer still roams free?

Timing is everything, though he can’t wait forever. If she’s not frightened, she soon will be. Nia has made a vow to aind her cousin’s killer. She should be careful what she wishes for. (Goodreads)

There are some spoilers from book 2 in here so proceed at your own risk.

If You Know Her is the conclusion to Shiloh walker’s exciting, nerve racking, explosive romantic suspense Ash Trilogy. She has led us on a merry chase as we watch a town terrorized by a serial killer scramble to stop him from claiming anymore victims. Though a fan of everything Ms. Walker writes, I am bias in my thinking that she absolutely kicks arse in romantic suspense. Not only does Ms. Walker deliver her trademark scorching hot love scenes and dynamic, personable characters in here but she goes above and beyond in creating a suspense that will keep you perched on the edge till the very end.  Exciting pacing and a dramatic multi layered storyline will hold you hostage as the tension builds through the book, increasing with each new revelation.  Ms. Walker gives us two wonderfully strong and charismatic protagonists in the form of Nia Hollister and Law Reilly.

Curves & Qs Blog Tour and Giveaway

Curves & Qs

I’m so excited to be part of Shiloh Walker’s blog tour celebrating the release of her last two book in her Ash Trilogy-If You See Her and If You Know Her.

Each participant in this tour was was allowed to ask one question about the trilogy.

My Question: Your endings to each Ash story were unconventional. Did you expect the extreme reaction to got to it?

Shiloh’s Answer: I figured I'd have some people disgruntled, yes.  The only reason this worked was because Ballantine was ready to give me release dates for all three titles so close together.  I knew going in that I'd be ending each story in a different sort of way and I was prepared for some…ah…interesting responses.  But I really couldn't have done it any other way, if I wanted to give the overall story my absolute best.

Excerpt:

From IF YOU KNOW HER

Nia's hand shook as she reached for her cell phone.

It took three tries to actually get her hands to cooperate long enough to call Bryson.  Before her cousin died, Bryson had been Joely's fiancĂ©, and a casual friend of Nia's.  The two of them had tried to keep in touch for a while, both Nia and Bryson had finally realized their memories were too painful.

Needless to say, he wasn't pleased to have her on the phone.  “Nia…it's late.”

She glanced at the clock, winced when she saw it was past eleven.

“Sorry. This won't take long.  I just…ah, well.  I had a question.  Had Joely gotten her hair cut recently?”

“Her hair? What?”

“Yeah.  A hair cut.  Had she gotten it cut before she…ah..died?”

He sighed.  “No.  She hadn't.  She wanted it long for the wedding--something…” His voice half broke.  “Shit.  No.  I don't know what the hell this is about, but she hadn't gotten her fucking hair cut.”

“Okay.  Thank you.”

He hung up without saying another word.

Nia put her phone down and continued to stare at the report.  This didn't mean anything.   She waited for that rational voice to murmur an agreement, waited for that voice to tell her to dump this file, just like she had dumped so many others.

But for once, that voice was silent.

Completely and utterly silent.
