I’m reviewing Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon at Smexybooks, today

Styxx (Dark Hunter #23) by Sherrilyn Kenyon
Paranormal Romance
September 3, 2013
St. Martin’s Press

Just when you thought doomsday was over…

Centuries ago Acheron saved the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life and future for Acheron’s.

The Atlantean goddess of Wrath and Misery, Bethany was born to right wrongs. But it was never a task she relished. Until now. She owes Acheron a debt that she vows to repay, no matter what it takes. He will join their fellow gods in hell and nothing is going to stop her.

But things are never what they seem, and Acheron is no longer the last of his line. Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it’s your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul? (Goodreads)

Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series remains one of the best selling paranormal romance series to date and for good reason. Speaking to readers of all ages and genres, Ms. Kenyon’s unique twist on vampires, mythology, and religion combines fantasy with paranormal romance to create a genre all its own.

Ms. Kenyon has enthralled me since her first book, Fantasy Lover. Intriguing suspense, non stop action, sizzling romance, and wicked humor has kept this intensely character driven series an auto buy for me well into it’s twenty third release, Styxx. Now I know many fans were shocked when Kenyon announced Styxx was the next hero in this series. Though we had seen him through the series, he has never been portrayed in a favorable light. Considered the ultimate villain, most fans identified him as a threat to our beloved Ash.

Review: The Unwanted by Shiloh Walker

The Unwanted

The Unwanted (FBI Psychics Novella #3.5) by Shiloh Walker
Paranormal Romance
E book, 143 pages
July 30, 12013
Samhain Publishing

Favorite Quote: “All I knew was that you were leaving me...leaving me and breaking my heart.“

She doesn’t want him. He doesn’t need her. Like hell…

Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away.

Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best.

For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside.

Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power.

But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do. (Goodreads)

I thoroughly enjoy Shiloh Walker’s FBI Psychics series. An intensely sensual and intriguing dark paranormal series that addresses the choices one makes when battling evil with shocking gifts that can often work against the owner.  The Unwanted is a novella that helps to forge the link between the FBI group and a private investigative group.  Though part of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. The Unwanted is a shockingly seductive psychological thriller that hooked me from page one. Shiloh Walker has a wonderful writing style that draws you into her characters’ emotional pathways and lets you feel with them what they are experiencing. Romance and taut suspense go hand in hand as we follow a gritty and dark well plotted storyline down a twisting path of deception, betrayal, and madness.

Destin Mortin has a gift that gives as well as receives. A fact that her ex boyfriend and partner, Caleb Durand, struggled to cope with until he was forced to leave her to save his own sanity. When Destin’s boss hands her a case on some unsolved college rapes, Destin is dismayed to find she will be partnered with Caleb. Destin has never understood or forgave caleb for abandoning her. Caleb loved Destin unconditionally but her gift and her refusal to learn control over it killed his soul a little everyday. As Destin and Caleb investigate their case, they learn some interesting information that suggests that this case strikes closer to home then they could ever imagine.

The romance between them is hot yet bittersweet. The chemistry between them smolders heavy in the background as they struggle to get past the hurt and pain they left each other with. It’s a strong part of the storyline and complements the main conflict. Their physical scenes are tasteful and satisfying. It was very easy to get caught up in the emotional currents of these two star crossed lovers as try to find their second chance.

The secondary characters are bold, viable additions to the story as they add layers to the suspense and mystery. Each one is a piece in the puzzle; they make up a solid foundation for our storyline to build upon. As with any good thriller, there are multipe sub plots running through the main storyline and each one is a key to the final outcome. Ms. Walker does a fabulous job of maintaining these separate entities without overburdening us with unnecessary information or complicated scenarios. When it all comes together in the end, we are treated to an astounding finale that ties it all together.

The Unwanted is a worthy addition to this series and a must read for those readers who love their paranormal romances to be wrapped in dark emotional suspense and intrigue. I am looking forward to the release of her next full length novel in the series, The Protected, set to release September 3, 2013, by Berkley Trade.

I'm reviewing Jennifer Ashley's Tiger Magic at Smexybooks

tigermagic

Tiger Magic (Shifters Unbound #5) by Jennifer Ashley
Paranormal Romance
June 4, 2013
Berkley
Favorite Quote: “I’m a little afraid, sure [...] it’s not everyday I slap duct tape over a man’s mouth and stuff him in my truck.”
Tiger was held in a secret lab for forty years; experimented on and tortured. Rescued by the Las Vegas shifter pack, he is sent to the Austin pack until they can  figure out what exactly to do with him. Unusual in his make up, Tiger is a loner who makes all shifters, except for children, very uneasy. Not sure where his life is going, when he happens upon a human woman stranded on the side of the road, he knows instantly he is seeing his destiny.
Carly Randal has a fabulous life with a supposedly faithful fiance and a job she loves. When her car breaks down in the middle of the desert, she turns to see a single shifter staring at her across the sand. Not having interacted much with shifters, she is surprised when her body and mind both zero in on the shifter-shouting MINE.
When circumstances push Carly in to Tiger’s world and his arms, she finds her original impressions of shifters radically changed. As she slowly gets to know him better, she  is willing to do anything to protect him and the love that is developing between them. Shifters, humans, and politics be damned. Tiger now belongs to Carly and she’ll take on the world to keep him by her side.
Tiger Magic is the fifth book in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series. A true paranormal romance that delivers well developed characters, devious plots lines, steamy romance, and engaging dialogue. I love the balance created in here between the sexy romance and the heart pounding action. Though you know your happy ending is coming, the path that you follow to this conclusion is fraught with peril and heartbreak and all you can do ride it out as Ashley weaves her magic around you. Evolving world building allows for easy comprehension even though it is rather convoluted. These are not stand alones. Filled with multi layered plots that further expand the storyline and take us in new directions; you will find yourself devouring each page as new subplots yield bigger clues and dangerous situations, leading us towards our final outcome.

Diana’s Hound (Bloodhounds #4) by Moira Rogers
PNR/steampunk/Suspense
Ebook
April 23, 2013
Samhain Publishing, LTD

Favorite Quote: “Not having isn't the torment. Having and losing is. “

Nate Powell lived a fulfilling if not sedate life as an inventor until he was kidnapped, experimented on and turned into a hybrid-1/2 bloodhound and ½ vampire. He longs for death until a new arrival at Iron Creek peaks more than just his interest.

Diana is a rarity in the Bloodhound world as she is female. A fierce warrior who is unapologetic about her gender and sexual appetites, she is a conundrum for Nate.  Her attraction to Nate is ripe with both need and exasperation as he pushes her away out of fear yet pulls her back to him in his need to protect her.

When the answer to rumors that someone is selling women to vampires as unwilling blood donors is dropped in their laps, Nate and Diana make plans to go undercover and smoke out this rogue bloodhound. Soon, the pull of the new moon heightens the attraction between Nate and Diana, sending it spiraling out of control. If Diana and Nate can survive this job...will they accept their destiny or consign themselves to a fate worse than death?
I absolutely ADORE Moira Rogers’s steampunk/ pnr series-The Bloodhounds. In fact, I pretty much adore all their work. Diana’s Hound is an incredibly sexy, action packed story that will keep you glued to your e reader. Ripe with sexual promise and a tense storyline, this enchanting mixture of old and new sets the stage as we prepare to engage with our two explosive protagonists-Nate and Diana.

Urban Fantasy
March 19, 2013
Samhain

Favorite Quote: “Actions and consequences.”

Oh. My. Spoilers ahead.

Karma’s a bitch.

At the end of Keeping Secret, we learned that Lucas Raintree is the arse we have always thought he was when he leaves Secret standing at the altar while he handles a small problem for her uncle. He sends Desmond to inform Secret of his defection. *gasp* Though, I have to admit, a small part of me smirked and thought, “You totally deserved this, Secret.”

In Grave Secret, Secret is dealing with her anger towards Lucas by really not dealing with it. She ignores his calls, refuses to accept his apologies, and has essentially declared him persona non grata in her life. She is working to get Desmond back in her life and bed again when Lucas, like the bad penny he is, shows up and informs her that his sister, Kellon, is missing and as pack enforcer and his were queen, (they are bound together regardless of the actually wedding), she needs to find her. Secret is also investigating a rash of murders involving teenagers where her bff Callippe looks to be prime suspect number one, and Secret’s mother is back and wants Secret’s crown…preferably with her head attached to it.

Sebastian (Bast) Kent has always been considered an outcast in the vampire community. Unsure who sired him, Sebastian has struggled his whole life with his identity. When he becomes violently ill outside of a bar, he is rescued by a young homeless woman named Alice.
Alice Bowman lives on the street as a victim of circumstances. When she sees Bast getting violently ill she can sympathize due to her own illness and risks her life to take him to safety. Bast is attracted to Alice and hires her against his better judgment, to help him trace his genealogy to discern the reasons for his mysterious illness. An illness that only dissipates beneath the cool touch of Alice’s touch and kisses.
As Alice and Bast explore their growing passion, Bast’s mysterious illness morphs into something incredible and dangerous. So dangerous in fact that certain individuals will stop at nothing to ensure Bast never recovers…even if that means death.
Hunger Awakened is a hot and steamy erotic paranormal romance. Dark and sensual, it is balanced by touches of humor and whimsy that allows for a fast paced read. Easy to follow, the world building and character development allows us to slip easily into this secretive and highly guarded world of vampires and the harsh politics that rule their domain. Though Hunger Awakened is connected to two other books (Hunger Revealed and Hunger Aroused) it readily stands on its own and reading the other two first isn’t necessary.

Midnight Ink

Favorite Quote: “I like my men brainy and cultured, which are not qualities prevalent in the men of Goodnight. One of the many reasons I haven’t been on a date in years. That and I’m related to a large portion of the male population.“

Mona McGregor may never have wanted to be the High Priestess but she takes her responsibilities very serious. With raising her two nieces, running her magical shop, and leading her large coven, Mona is a one woman machine with no time for anything or anyone extra in her life. That is, until sexy werewolf Adam Blue appears on her porch and tells her that someone has placed a hit on her. Suddenly, Mona is eyeballing everyone in her town, friend and family alike, trying to figure out who wants her dead. Mona and Adam team up to smoke out the killer and when the flames spark between the two of them, Mona is left trying to figure out how to put out the flames….and if she even wants to.

I love Ms. Harlow’s F.R.E.A.K. Squad series and was excited to see she was developing a new series within the same world. What’s A Witch To Do is filled with dry humor, steamy romance, and a well plotted mystery. We are taken on a fast light-hearted journey that leaves you laughing out loud while giving you a couple mysteries to solve. Bedlam reigns supreme as Mona tries to figure out who wants her dead and why she suddenly has two suitors after a fifteen year dry spell.

A joint review by Helyce and Tori

Favorite Quotes:

Helyce: “Their bond had defied death, and he had never felt so humbled by anything before in all his days. He loved this woman–his woman, his eternal mate. He needed her more than air, more than anything else this life could give him. His heart swelled with love for her, reborn and renewed, beating as hard and strong as a drum.”

Tori: “If you don’t love me, “ she said, “if you truly want me gone…then let go.”

Edge Of Dawn picks up twenty some years after Darker Than Midnight. This is the new generation, folks. *cue the Star Trek music* While we do see the original cast, this story centers around Mira. We learn she and the others; Nathan, Kellan, ect…are all grown up and now the warriors that try to keep the peace between the humans and the Order. Mira is slowly unraveling though as she has never gotten over the death of her only love, fellow Breed warrior, Kellen Archer. Mira finally takes one to many risks and her punishment is demotion and being placed on bodyguard duty to a young, genius, germophobe scientist. Her job is to accompany him to the GNC summit being held to try and hammer out peace between the humans and the Order. When she arrives at his home during a kidnapping attempt, she is taken hostage along with the scientist, and comes face to face with the one man she never thought to see alive again.

Kellan Archer was supposed to be dead; killed in an explosion. We soon learn that Kellan was NOT killed in that explosion but actually orchestrated his own death, abandoned the Order, and now leader of a vigilante group of humans. Kellen never thought he would see Mira again, though he has purposely stayed around Boston to keep an eye on her. Seeing Mira has brought back all the intense feelings he never lost for her, but he knows that Mira will never forgive him for his betrayal of the Order or her.

When a member of Kellan’s group goes rogue and kidnaps the scientist right from under their noses, He & Mira are forced to work together to figure out who wants to destroy the summit, the Order, and keep Kellan from being branded a traitor and killed.

I’m reviewing Winterblaze by Kristen Callihan at Smexy Books

winterblazeWinterblaze (Darkest London #3) by Kristen Callihan
Paranormal Historical Romance
February 26, 2013

Favorite Quote: “My life began with you.“

Poppy Lane thought she was doing the right thing when she kept the secrets her mother forced upon her growing up. When her husband is brutally attacked, she is forced to reveal her secrets and the consequences may be more than she can bear.

Winston Lane has loved Poppy from the first moment he saw her striding through the train station. Fourteen years of marriage has only deepened his love for her, but when he discovers that his wife has been living a secret life apart from him, he’s devastated at her betrayal and leaves her in anger.

After three months of separation, Poppy receives a note from an old enemy that hints at retribution through Winston. She swallows her pride and goes to him, intent on keeping him safe and attempting a reconciliation. But Winston isn’t ready to forgive Poppy. And when more secrets come to light, Poppy isn’t altogether sure he should.

Winterblaze is the third installment in Callihan’s Darkest London series. A dark, sensuous, paranormal romance whose world is built upon the past, set in Victorian England. Heavily character driven, it’s the sensuous evolution of our protagonists and the plot lines that make this series such a fascinating journey. Smooth writing and sharp descriptive detailing drew me in as Callihan further explores and reveals the supernatural wonders of her world. I continue to be impressed by the time and effort Callihan takes in developing her characters and their connections to the world and each other. Each new book offers more evidence of the ties that bind them all together. I don’t recommend reading this as a stand alone. Though each book revolves around a main hero and heroine and has a resolvable conflict, the longstanding arc continues to develop in each new story and the characters bleed over. (The first two books, Firelight and Moonglow are just as good)

Police officer Jenna O’Connor has spent her whole life hiding from what her mother called the Others – supernatural beings. Repeatedly told they would kill her because of her hybrid status, she has spent her life staying under the radar, letting no one but her family into her life. No more though. In an attempt to live her own life, she moves to Wilmington, NC and lands her dream job on the SWAT team. She never expects her cover to be blown the first day when she meets Adam McPhee. She instantly knows he’s not human, like her, but figures she can handle anything he throws her way.

Adam McPhee, the smoking hot Alpha of the NC pack, is more wolf than human and now has his sights set on the sexy little SWAT agent who stepped between him and his prey. He knows Jenna isn’t human but can’t figure out exactly what she is and his curiosity to find out more about her, could get them both killed if he isn’t careful.

When a group of violent shifters who are part of an elitist pact that views humans as cattle, storm the town, threatening humans and Others alike, Jenna finds herself knee deep in a world her mama told her to always avoid. As Jenna tries to find her footing, learning new and unbelievable things about herself and theOthers, she begins to wonder if her mama wasn’t right.

Fans of Shelly Laurenston’s Pride series will enjoy this. Similar in makeup, Lane has created a world where supes are a normal part of society and plenty of humor, snark, and action play alongside crazy, engaging characters.

He is now working to bring his Brood into the 21st century and stop the barbaric behavior they have been indulging in before they drive themselves into extinction. He is also trying to keep Gunni from fading into death. Gunni is still grieving over the violent death of the love of his life, Alice, and it is slowly killing him. When Gunni and Brand chance upon a deadly trapper who has caged members of the Brood, they also encounter Leo, a human who appeals to Gunni and his wolf in ways he has never felt before in a man. But Leo is a shamen and considered an enemy of the Brood. When Leo is hurt trying to help Gunni locate a missing brood member, Gunni heals him, initiating a bond of sorts, and suddenly the hole in his soul begins to close. Now Gunni must make a choice. Will he adhere to Brood tradition and let Leo go? Or will he follow with his heart and accept the healing love Leo can provide?

Marked by Oden picks up a few months after Broods Of Fenrir ended. Brand is struggling to bring his brood under control and dealing with some heavy personal issues with his mate, Dagny. Though we see Brand and Dagny, this installment focuses heavily on Gunni and a romantic relationship he embarks on; to the point where other subplots take a distinct backseat.

I love Moira Rogers’s steampunk/ pnr series-The Bloodhounds. An incredibly sexy, action packed story that will keep you glued to your e reader. An enchanting mix of old and new sets the stage as we engage with our two fascinating protagonists-Archer and Grace.

I’m reviewing Erica O’Rourke’s Bound at Smexybooks

Bound (Torn Trilogy, #3)

Bound (Torn Trilogy #3) by Erica O’ Rourke
Paranormal YA
June 26, 2012
Kensington

Favorite Quote: “Not everything is fixable.”

Bound picks up about right where Tangled left off. Mo used her gifts to avenge her friend’s death and negotiate with her family for some much needed freedom. Thinking she is finally going to be free, her uncle flips the tables and pushes for more from Mo and isn’t above using her family and friends to get what he wants. Mo makes the ultimate sacrifice and gives up her dreams in order to keep everyone she loves safe. But not everyone appreciates her sacrifices. Mo’s inability to let things lay soon places her and Colin in discord. Mo soon finds herself pulled in different directions as her magic, the Arcs, and her family makes demands on her she can no longer ignore. As Mo tries to clean up her mess, she sets in motion a dangerous game that unless played just right, will destroy them all.

I’m reviewing Gena Showalter’s Wicked Nights at Smexybooks

Wicked Nights ( Angels of the Dark #1 ) by Gena Showalter
Paranormal Romance
June 26, 2012
HQN

Favorite Quote: “I’m done listening to this meaningless jabber. Team Winger sucks!”

Wicked Nights is a spin off of Ms. Showalter’s dark and sexy PNR series, Lords Of The Underworld. Focusing almost entirely on the war between heaven and hell, Ms. Showalter introduces us to a group of winged warriors who are one step away from falling from grace. Disgraced for their brutality and lack of compassion, these angels of darkness are charged with saving mankind from demons and redeeming themselves in the eyes of their creator. Zacharel , whom we saw periodically in the LOTU series, is the leader of this group and whose cold and icy demeanor is legendary. When a group of demons are sighted at a mental hospital for the criminally insane, Zacharel and another angel go to investigate. There Zacharel finds Annabelle. Annabelle Miller was committed to the institution four years ago for brutally murdering her parents. Annabelle knows who killed her parents, she just doesn’t know why. Zacharel feels a connection to Annabelle and when he realizes the abuse she is suffering at the hands of demons and humans in the institution, he steals her away takes her for safekeeping. Now, Zacharel and Annabelle need to discover who set her up and why.
