MAC and Estee Lauder go Retro

el-mad-men-makeup

The hit show Mad Men finally returns next month, and to say sorry for the delay they're offering us one heck of a gift: a makeup collab. Estée Lauder will launch a mini range of show-inspired products on their website on March 18, with ads featuring Constance Jablonski doing her best Betty Draper impression.

Not to be out done, MAC has announced a retro line of makeup inspired by Marilyn Monroe. The collection, set to launch in October, will include lipstick, eyeshadow, nail polish, and more.  Think bold reds and hot pinks. Now the only question is who will appear in the ads: will it be Michelle Williams or one of the girls from that show Smash?

Tempting Thursday-DIY Your very own Burberry trench

When I saw this I SQUEEEEd myself hoarse. This year’s Burberry trench has been on my wish list ever since Christopher Bailey first walked his design down the runway. The trench has always been a classic must have but Bailey’s biker chic embellishments elevates the piece to almost iconic standards.BONDED NAPPA STUDDED BIKER TRENCH COAT
The Bonded Nappa Biker Studded Trench ($7995) is my personal fav but at 8 grand…I don’t see it gracing my closet anytime soon. This year proves to be no difference. Thank goodness for Erica Domesek from P.S. I Made This. She along with WHOWHATWEAR shows how to make our very own Burberry Prorsum's studded trench at quite a discount.

INGREDIENTS:
-HM Trench Coat ($60)
-Approximately 400 chopsticks or candy apple sticks
-Handsaw
-Gold spray paint
-Chalk
-Glue Gun
DIRECTIONS
Before you begin: if you're particularly good with a handsaw or know someone with a power table saw, proceed with Step 1. For those of you who don't have those tools handy, you can make an alternative version of this trench by purchasing and using gold studs instead. If you choose to do the latter, please refer to the second set of instructions
1. Cut down chopsticks or candy apple sticks to about an inch with a handsaw or ask someone with a power table saw to cut down for you. You should end up with 164 pointy ends for each sleeve.
2. Once you finished cutting the sticks, it's time to paint them! Make sure you're in a well-ventilated area and are working on a flat surface. We suggest protecting your workspace with old magazines or newspaper.
3. Apply a layer of gold spray paint to the pointy tips. Leave them on your workspace for approximately 15 minutes or until dry. Flip them over and spray the other side.
4. Before you apply the spikes to the jacket, use white chalk to outline a rectangle on each arm, starting at the shoulder and ending at the elbow. You want it to be large enough to fit approximately 24 rows and five columns, but this will vary depending on the size of your jacket and how many spikes you want on it.
5. Space the gold spikes evenly in each row and use dabs of hot glue or super glue to secure each spike onto the jacket.
6. Wait approximately 10 minutes or until the glue is completely dry before wearing the trench.
If you choose to use studs:
INGREDIENTS
- H&M Trench Coat ($60)
- 17 bags of Tree Spikes ($13/bag of 20) in Gold
-Leather hole punch or X-Acto knife
-Chalk
DIRECTIONS
1.Before you apply the studs to the jacket, use white chalk to outline a rectangle on each arm, starting at the shoulder and ending at the elbow. You want it to be large enough to fit approximately 24 rows and five columns, but this will vary depending on the size of your jacket and how many studs you want on it.
2. Create small holes using a leather hole punch or X-Acto knife where you would like each stud to go.
3. Press the post of the stud through the small hole and screw the back onto the post.

Pulp Fashion: The Art of Isabelle de Borchgrave

February 5, 2011 - June 5, 2011

Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave is a painter by training, but textile and costume are her muses. Working in collaboration with leading costume historians and young fashion designers, de Borchgrave crafts a world of splendor from the simplest rag paper. Painting and manipulating the paper, she forms trompe l’oeil masterpieces of elaborate dresses inspired by rich depictions in early European painting or by iconic costumes in museum collections around the world.  The Legion of Honor is the first American museum to dedicate an entire exhibition to the work of Isabelle de Borchgrave, although her creations have been widely displayed in Europe.

Pulp Fashion draws on several themes and presents quintessential examples in the history of costume—from Renaissance finery of the Medici family and gowns worn by Elizabeth I and Marie-Antoinette to the creations of the grand couturiers Frederick Worth, Paul Poiret, Christian Dior, and Coco Chanel. Special attention is given to the creations and studio of Mariano Fortuny, the eccentric early-20th-century artist who is both a major source of inspiration to de Borchgrave and a kindred spirit.

Tempting Tuesday-The Allure of the 50s

The over whelming popularity of the tv show Mad Men is more then just due to fine acting. It's the fashion worlds love of anything 1950s. The 50's were exciting years in the world of fashion. Following the frugality during the war,  glamor was the light at the end of the tunnel. And the effects that Hollywood would have on the way that women dressed during this period would create a social phenomenon that no one could have anticipated.

Prada 2011
Dolce  Gabbana 2011

Women were no longer shown as just being housewives, and although many remained faithful to the long standing image of the mother in the home, a certain element of glamor became not only the norm, but an acceptable part of life for women all over the world.

Designers such as Dior and Givenchy shied away from the traditional and embraced a new beginning. They introduced shapes that emphasized and flowed around a woman's shape, rather than the restrictive  clothing of the 40s. The fashion world was realizing that women wanted glamor but also wanted functional comfortable clothing.

Music was not exempt from change either. The Rock 'N Roll era was to make a split in fashion styles, taking women away from the traditional to the Teddy Boy styles. Here- teased hair, tight capri's, and sexy heels hair became popular with younger women.

Guess Marchino 2010 Collection
This was a era that would trend for the next 20 years, setting the standards of fashion that are used to this day. We will forever admire the stars and designers of this glamorous era and the impact they had on society's perception of what women should look like and what style they should wear.

Tempting Thursday

I have never been a huge Gisele fan. I think it's the whole Tom Brady aspect. I HATE Tom Brady.

He's a big cry baby loser cheater. She married the big cry baby loser so that makes her Mrs.Big Cry Baby Loser Cheater. But after seeing Gisele's showing for Roberto Cavalli Fall 2010 I have decided that regardless of her obvious bad taste...she completely rocked this ad.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the fall campaign from Roberto Cavalli goes big with supermodel Gisele Bundchen starring as the face of the newest collection. Decked from head to toe in lush animal prints, fur and decorative patterns, Gisele is on fire in the five image campaign shot by Mert & Marcus.

If your gonna drool...drool on designer.
Fendi has broke ranks and joined the baby brigade.

Fendi is starting a children's line to be produced in partnership with Simonetta SpA. The new line for newborns to boys and girls up to 12 years old debuted at Pitti Immagine Bimbo in Florence and includes pale colors, floral prints, checks, and bucolic inspiration.

Frank Sorbier's 2010/2011 Showing in Paris
Franck Sorbier proved that in couture, it's creativity and technical savoir faire,  not deep pockets, that really count. The Frenchman's fall-winter 2011 show in a tiny hall lent to him by Sotheby's auction house, was at the opposite end of the spectrum from the big-budget megaproductions put on by luxury houses. But the collection didn't suffer for it.

As Paris' three-day-long haute couture collections wind down Wednesday, Sorbier's show was a much-needed reminder that couture need not be smothered in sequins or dripping with rhinestones to be desirable.
